About Us

The National Insurance Trust Fund Board was established by the National Insurance Trust Fund Act, No. 28 of 2006. Its contribution towards the economy encompasses the provision of reinsurance, strike, riot, civil commotion and Agrahara medical insurance, health insurance, other forms of general insurance including and crop insurance covers. NITF has extended its services to the general public with regard to the provision of all classes of general insurance.

National Insurance Trust Fund was established in 2006, as a statutory body to offer Agrahara Insurance for public sector. We offer unique benefit schemes and provide protection for all segment in general insurance industry.

NITF ushered a new era to insurance industry by serving all government officers providing general insurance schemes. We have been providing insurance cover to all Strike, Riot, Civil Commotion & Terrorism through our SRCC & T Fund. As per a government Gazette notification No. 1791/4 of 31st December 2012, all primary insurers are now required to cede 30% of their total reinsurance premium arising out of every general reinsurance contract to NITF. At present, the National Insurance Trust Fund is the only Sri Lankan body which provides reinsurance cover to primary insurers. NITF takes pride in having some of the best turnaround times in service to settle the claim and handle exceptions fast and according to our business rules.

Mrs. Sagala Abhayawickreme joined the NITF in 2023, becoming the first female chairperson in its history. She recruited competent staff to drive the fund forward. A lawyer by profession, she provided solutions to numerous legal challenges. She pioneered public access to the NITF by designating Mondays as a public day. Additionally, she introduced a system to process Agrahara claims within ten days. Under her leadership, the backlog accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic and fuel crisis was successfully addressed.











Ms. Sagala Abhayawickrama

2023 - Present

Mr. Mawahib Mowjood joined the NITF in 2020 as Chairman and faced many challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. However, he overcame the issues efficiently.He has experience in both the government and private sectors. Some institutions he worked for include Working Director and Acting Chairman, Road Development Authority (RDA); Director, Maga Neguma; Member, Board of Directors, Sri Lanka Tea Board; Member, National Police Commission, Member, Board of Directors, Lankaputhra Development Bank, and Board Member, National Savings Bank.










Mr. Mawahib Mowjood

2020 - 2023

Mr. Manjula de Silva joined the NITF in 2015 as the Chairman. He has previously served as a Member of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HNB Assurance, and Director General of the Public Enterprise Reform Commission.He is also a former Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and was in the Regional Board for the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa region.A past president of both the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka and the Unit Trust Association of Sri Lanka.He has served in the chamber committee and as the Chairman of the steering committee on insurance.










Mr. Manjula De. Silva

2015 - 2019

Mr. Vidanagamachchi joined the NITF in 2013 after retiring from the post of Deputy Secretary to the Treasury. He previously served as Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Board Member of Peoples Bank, Airport and Aviation, Telecom, and Lanka Sathosa, National Water and Drainage Board. During his tenure, he leveraged his knowledge and experience to make numerous policy decisions that shaped the NITF's operations.

2013 - 2014

Mr. A.K. Seneviratne joined the NITF as Chairman in 2012, having previously served as an NITF Board Member since 2010. He possesses extensive experience in preparing the Sri Lankan National Budget. Additionally, he has served on the boards of the Ayurveda Corporation and the Securities Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka. Under his leadership, the reinsurance percentage increased from 20% to 30%, contributing to foreign currency retention within the country.

Mr. Senaka Abeygunasekera joined the NITF in 2010 and focused on expanding the general insurance business by acquiring large portfolios and increasing the branch network, including the opening of the Hambantota branch. He initiated the creation of a NITF logo and the tagline "Trust Forever."

2010 - 2012

Mr A A Wijepala joined the NITF in 2008 after retiring from the position of Commissioner General of Inland Revenue. He managed the fund efficiently and made some necessary recruitments. He identified the insurance needs of the country and made arrangements to gazette provisions for insurance for migrant workers and general insurance business (other than life insurance) for government institutions and the private sector. He initiated the opening of the first branch office in Anuradhapura.

2009 - 2010

Professor Lakshman R. Watawala joined the NITF as Chairman in 2008. Previously, he served as Chairman and Managing Director of the State Mining and Mineral Development Corporation, Chairman of People's Bank & People's Merchant Bank, Chairman of Pan Asia Bank Ltd., and a Financial, Foreign Investment, and Educational Consultant.Leveraging his extensive experience and knowledge, he made significant contributions to the upliftment of the NITF.











Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala

2008 - 2009

Former Vice Chancellor of Sri Jayewardenepura University of Sri Lanka, Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Chairman of National Savings Bank, and Director General of National Institute of Education, joined NITF as the first Chairman once the National Insurance Trust Fund Act No 28 of 2006 was passed. It was a major task to recruit the required staff, find necessary resources, and introduce an agrahara claim management system. However, he successfully overcame these challenges.He was an academic, economist, speaker, author, lawyer, orator, administrator, and politician.
